The holiday town of Aghios Nicolaos in Eastern Crete is on of the islands more attractive destinations. Formally a fishing village it boasts a lake, port and lovely aquamarine seas.
The area around the picturesque‘bottomless’lake of Voulismeni you will find cafes and tavernas behind the harbour there is a good shopping area.
The beaches are shingle and there are bathing platforms below the promenade. You can take the local bus to more sandy beaches if you prefer, the one at Almyros about 1km south of the town is usually less crowded.
You can enjoy days out by hire car which are widely available and visit the palm fringed Via beach and the plain of a thousand windmills at Lassithe.
Other attractions you may want to visit here are the archaeological museum and the folk museum. You may be interested in taking a boat trip to Spinalonga Island which was a leper colony, the last leper died here in 1953 and the island has been uninhabited ever since. It is a fascinating place to explore, the excursion boats from Aghios pass by Birch Island and Kri Kri Island which is the last habitat of Crete’s wild goats.
This resort has plenty of restaurants, bars and discos, which can get lively! Aghios Nicolaos offers plenty of choice for water sport enthusiasts, there is plenty here to suit all age groups.
About 11km from the resort is the village of Kritsa, buses run frequently to the village; here you will see the triple-aisled Church of Panagia Kera. The frescoes on the interior walls are considered to be one of the best examples of Byzantine art in Crete.
