Along this coast there are a range of resorts to choose from, some have excellent watersports on offer if you are looking for a more active holiday, as well as sun, sea and sand.

The resort town of Alvor with its narrow streets and white houses makes for a very pleasant relaxing holiday destination. The Alvor Torralta beach is just out of the town it has a long stretch of golden sand where you can soak up the sun and enjoy refreshments at one of the bars. You can visit the Church of Matriz with its beautiful stone carving, also worth considering is a visit to the Alvor Estuary where thousands of wetland birds search for shellfish along with the local people.

The seaside resort of Praia de Luz is a popular holiday destination. The gently shelving beach with golden sands also has its own Blue Flag and life guards on duty in the main season - this makes for a safe bathing area. It is suitable for all age groups. You will find excellent watersports are available here. Behind the beach are the impressive coloured sandstone cliffs.

As you stroll around the resort a visit to the Fort which dates from the 17th century is recommended, there are stunning views over the bay to enjoy. At various sites around Luz you will see remnants of the Roman occupation there are mosaic tiled floors and ancient stone walls.

There are plenty of cafes/bars to chill out, relax and watch the world go by and a variety of nightlife to enjoy. You will find restaurants offering continental food as well as local cuisine. Praia de Luz is small enough for everything to be within walking distance.

About a 6km drive away from Luz is the historic town of Lagos. Here there are many fine restaurants, bars, craft shops and boutiques. You can also book a dolphin spotting trip or a sea fishing trip here.
