Épernay is a small attractive town about 16 miles or 26km south of Reims it makes an excellent base for exploring the vineyards and attractions in the surrounding area. As you stroll around you will notice the splendid tree-lined streets, head for the Avenue de Champagne where many of the most famous champagne maisons are located here you will see some impressive 18th and 19th buildings. You will find many maisons offer organized tours; some are more interesting and rewarding than others. You can see, and learn how this famous drink is made and produced.

At one of the smaller champagne houses, Castellane, visitors can watch work in progress see the huge vats and working assembly lines and afterwards browse around the museum. Some of the larger champagne houses do not let visitors see the workers actually working, most of the houses do have museums to wander around after the actual tours and they may be of interest to you. You may prefer to sit back and enjoy a champagne mini-bus excursion they are a good convenient and informative way of seeing the champagne area visitor attractions.

There are various types and quality of accommodation in and around the town to suit most budgets and a campsite a short distance away. You have a choice of restaurants and can enjoy some good food here; some can be expensive but are well worth the extra. You can also find inexpensive restaurants and places to eat and get refreshments.

You need to contact the tourist office for more details on accommodation available at the time you wish to take your holiday break and if you want more information on the excursions of the champagne houses and vineyards they will be able to help you.

You should get out and about while on holiday here and explore some of the interesting villages in the vineyards; at Mardeuil is the largest champagne bottle and cork! You will find a museum of marriage in Oger combined with collections of the labelling of champagne in the early 19th and 20th century.

If you are feeling a little energetic why not hire a mountain bike and go off and explore the nearby vineyards. You can choose to follow the Route Toristique du Champagne, Épernay has become known as the crossroads of various champagne trails just follow the road signs!
