The town of Ipswich in Suffolk, England makes a good base from which to explore this area of the country and is also worth considering for a short stay break. To get an insight into the history of this area you should visit the Ipswich Museum. One of the regular guided walks may be of interest or a bus tour; both are beneficial particularly if you are on a short holiday break. You can explore the town yourselves stroll through the historic streets and the regenerated waterfront.

Ipswich has two shopping malls The Buttermarket and Tower Ramparts, the main shopping areas have the popular high street stores as well as independent shops to browse around. There are plenty of shopping choices to suit most everyone! Ipswich town centre has been re-developed but many of the old streets still remain.

The Waterfront is close to the town centre here there are various bars and restaurants where you can sit down and relax awhile. Boat cruises leave from here for trips on the River Orwell, worth taking; you get to see some stunning scenery on these cruises.

Other museums of interest include the Ipswich Transport Museum where approximately 100 vehicles are housed in a tram depot.

The Air Raid Shelter Museum where you can experience the sounds etc of a bombing raid and find out what life was like for many people during the war years in Britain. There is also a collection of items and memorabilia relating to these times.

A short walk from the town centre is the magnificent Christchurch Mansion this Tudor building has period furnished rooms and also houses a large collection of paintings by Gainsborough and Constable. The Victorian wing has displays of children’s toys, well worth visiting.

Another visitor attraction is the Grade 1 listed building the Meeting House. It has a wonderful interior and retains some of its original features.
