Crete is Greeceís largest and one of its most beautiful islands; it is the most southerly Greek isle. Rethymnon is dominated by its Venetian fortress and is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in Greece. This resort has a long stretch of sand and shingle beach plus many amenities for you to enjoy. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants near the beach area.
If you need a change from the hotel pool or the beach it is worth exploring the town, a popular tourist attraction is the old Venetian Ottoman quarter; here you will find a maze of narrow streets, Venetian monuments and wooden balcony houses. Within the massive walls of Rythymnonís 16th Century fortress you will see a mosque and church there are also some excellent views from the ramparts and ruins to explore.
There is also a very good Historical and Folk Art museum which gives an insight into the lifestyle of this region. If you are feeling energetic you may want to join a half days organized walk which are on offer in Rythymnon, alternatively why not hire a bicycle and explore a little yourselves.
If you are an independent traveler and on a budget you maybe interested in the camp site which is situated approximately 3km from the resort near Mysiria Beach, there is also a youth hostel at Rythymnon.
Most holiday makers do come to the island on package tours; they offer you entertainment and activities at your chosen hotel. You may consider hiring transport either a car or motorcycle for a day or two this gives you the freedom of exploring yourselves.
There are many tourist attractions in this area for you to visit experience and enjoy.
About 23km from here is the Moni Arkadio with an impressive Venetian baroque church; you will see the Corinthian columns and the ornate tower. The monastery is surrounded by very attractive hill country.
There are various night spots around the resort to choose from, discos, clubs and cafes many stay open until the early hours. You can also find bars/cafes offering traditional live music.
In the Old town as you wander around you will come across tavernas offering some of the best Cretan food. There is plenty on offer here to make your holiday a success and is suitable for all age groups.
