Salzburg, Austria – Mozart’s birthplace and one of Europe’s
most beautiful cities, with magnificent historical buildings and some spectacular sights. Salzburg is a charming compact old city surrounded by mountains, whether you are looking for a short city break or a longer stay this city has plenty to offer its visitors.
With many fascinating town houses, 17th-18th century buildings and cobbled streets to wander through, the old city is easy to discover on foot.
Getreidgasse is the most famous street in the city, you will see intricate wrought iron signs from the 16-19th century, delightful old houses and picturesque courtyards. As you browse around the shops through the historic narrow lanes you will find Salzburg has a unique atmosphere.
If you are interested in jewellery you will see a huge number of shops selling fine jewellery in the narrow lanes of the old city. There are boutiques, chocolate shops and handicrafts, across the river is another popular shopping area Linzergasse, plenty of shops to keep you interested and occupied!
When you have finished all that shopping you may want to sample a pastry at one of the cafes in the old centre. There are lots of restaurants, cafes and bars in the city where you can sample regional Austrian cooking
or international cuisine.
Salzburg’s Christmas markets
are very popular the markets takes place on Domplatz, the city’s cathedral square. Here you will find many stalls which are beautifully decorated, bright coloured lights produce a special ambience as you wander through the festive stalls. Well worth visiting late November to December.
The Altstadt area is where most of the main sights are to be found. You may prefer to take a city tour and see the most important sights of Salzburg particularly if you are visiting for a short break.
Various tours are available to enable you to take in the city and the picturesque countryside. One tour includes Mozart’s Residenz, the Theatre, Getreidegasse and Mirabell Castle; it takes approximately one and a half hours.
Hohensalzburg Fortress the main landmark in the city was built in 1077 it is open to the public with daily guided tours which take about 45 minutes, in the Fortress Museum you will see a collection of instruments of torture.
Salzburg Cathedral with its splendid façade and impressive dome is well worth visiting, you will see the baptismal font in which Mozart was christened.
