Troyes in the Champagne region of France
has many visitor attractions in and around the surrounding area, it is worth considering for a short or longer holiday break location. The city has some interesting architecture, Gothic churches and some good museums to enjoy. As you stroll through medieval Troyes, along the narrow streets you will see many half-timber framed houses that have been caringly restored. These are the largest assemblage of half timber framed houses in Europe.
If you like to visit religious sites when on holiday there are several that may be of interest to you. The church of Sainte – Madeleine is the oldest church in Troyes modified in the 16 - 17th century, it was originally built in the 12th century. You will see a collection of ornate stained glass windows which tell the story of the lives of various Saints, it is also known for its intricate arched stone roof.
The Cathedrale de Saint-Pierre et Saint Paul has a very ornate Gothic façade, 13th century stained glass windows, both churches are worth visiting. Another religious site and tourist attraction is the Basilique St. Urbain which was built between 1262 and 1286 by Pope Urbain it is a notable church with many interesting features. There are other beautiful churches here you can visit if you are interested in religious buildings and sites.
You can enjoy a visit to the Museum of Modern Art where you will see a marvellous collection of modern and impressionist art. The museum is housed in the 16-17th century Bishops Palace.
If you enjoy browsing around museums you may want to visit the Musée St.Loup housed in the former Abbaye St. Loup, it is a antiquities and arts museum with collections of archaeology finds, jewellery, gargoyles and paintings from the 15th-19th centuries.
If you enjoy shopping you will find many shops and boutiques to keep you happy there are also outlet shops at Marques Avenue and Pont Saint Marie. After all the sightseeing and shopping why not relax and enjoy a crepe at one of the creperies, you can get hamburgers at one of the fast food outlets if you prefer.
If you need a change from the city, a short distance east of Troyes is the Parc Naturel Regional de la Foret d’ Orient. Here you will find plenty of outdoor activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and swimming in the Orient lakes. If you prefer walking there are hiking trails to enjoy. A trip not to be missed if you like outdoor pursuits something here to suit most everyone.
The beautiful medieval city of Troyes is a nice enjoyable place to stay with plenty of interesting things to see and do in the city and nearby.
